Incidence of Acute Appendicitis in Tri-County Puget Sound: A Spatial Analysis

My research examines the incidence of both acute appendicitis and perforated appendicitis in the Puget Sound region. Using a dual area-based methodology, I examine disease clustering and associations between appendicitis and neighborhood-level socio-economic factors. The substantive aim of this thesis is to identify and quantify epidemiologic differences between acute and perforated appendicitis, while the methodological aim is to compare the use of ZIP codes and census tracts for patient-level discharge data.
